My great fear got turned into strong passion.
Fear has a knack for making us feel stuck and content with what we have and what we are, preventing us from exploring new things or making improvements in our lives. That’s probably why we often end up doing only the things we’re good at. And that’s certainly why we miss a lot of opportunities that come our way.
I feared touching computers back in high school. Not knowing how it works or how to use it, I was afraid I would be laughed at by my classmates. I automatically thought that learning it was too complicated and overwhelming. Unfortunately, fear blocked me from learning about computers for many years. Had God not intervened, I would have stayed frightened of computers all my life. Thankfully, He started helping me overcome my fear during my senior year. That was also the first time I heard about programming. Still, that year ended with me uncertain of my path after graduation.
I later took the entrance examination in PUP San Pedro, intending to pursue an Accountancy degree. But then God had other plans for me. The exam results were released and I was deemed unqualified for accountancy. However, my score was exactly the points needed necessary for applicants to pursue Information Technology. It seemed God was showing me the career path He wanted for me. So, this time, I let Him decide for me and pursued IT.
My life was never the same afterwards.
Through my college years, I saw how God guided me. Not only did He help me turn my greatest fear into one of my strongest passions, but He also developed in me a keen interest in programming and a desire to learn more, especially about web development. Plus, I got to learn a lot and be friends with people who love programming; strengthening my passion further.
Fast-forward to a few months after I graduated. My first job wasn’t related to IT in any way, and I was looking for opportunities that would help me pursue my calling, responding to job ads and asking college friends if their company had openings. My chance came one day after a friend approached me and told me about an opening for a web developer position at Carl Ocab Digital Marketing. That’s how I got back on God’s desired career path again. Working at CODM is a blast, and it has given me opportunities to grow more as a web developer.
The greatest thing I learned was not to let fear get in the way of the many opportunities and great future ahead of you. As Roy T. Bennett once said, “Don’t be pushed around by the fears in your mind. Be led by the dreams in your heart”
