Back in 2006, when I was just introduced to the world of SEO, meta tags were the “craze”. Everyone was talking about stuffing their meta tags with keywords–and it worked. Meta tags were a big ranking factor back then even though it’s easy to manipulate.

Of course, Google was able to detect that right away and gave less importance to meta tags. Even though it’s not a strong ranking factor as before, it’s still an essential part of SEO.

What Are Meta Tags?

Meta tags are codes inside the <head> tag that provide information about the page to search engines and browsers. That’s why meta tags are still important. Without them, search engines and browsers would have a difficult time figuring out what your page is about.

Add These 5 Meta Tags to Your Site

The list below is the 5 most important meta tags for SEO. Use these tags correctly and it will help Google rank your sites for your keywords.

1. Title Tag

The title tag tells search engines what a page is about. It’s the title that shows up on the tab of your browser. It’s also the title that usually shows up in the search results. I said usually because sometimes Google doesn’t use a page’s title tag if it thinks there’s a more relevant title it can use in its search results.

Here are some dos and don’ts when writing your title tag:

Do:

  • Add your keywords in the title tag
  • Put the most important keywords first
  • Use 40-60 characters
  • Write attractive titles (Not only will you get more clicks, but you’ll also get better rankings eventually through RankBrain)

Don’t:

  • Stuff your title tag with keywords only
  • Use ALL CAPS on unnecessary words
  • Use repeat variations of your main keyword (Google understands variations of your keywords. That’s why if you optimize for the keyword “seo”, you’ll also rank for “search engine optimization”)

Example: <title>What Are Meta Tags? Add These 5 Important Tags on Your Site</title>

Here’s what it will look like on Google:

Title tag

2. Meta Description

The meta description tag is used for one purpose: to describe the page to searchers as they read through search results.

Meta descriptions can help you get better rankings… indirectly. It’s the text that appears at the bottom of the URL of a result on Google. People read it. It’s part of the copy of your website.

If you write an attractive meta description that gets people to click on your search result, then like the title tag’s influence on ranking via RankBrain, the meta description will indirectly affect your rankings, too.

Example: <meta name=”description” content=”What you put in the meta description tag of the page goes here. The optimal character count is between 120-160 characters.”/>

Here’s what it will look like on Google:

Meta Description

3. Meta Robots

The meta robots tag tells search engines what to do and what not to do on a certain page.

We use this tag here at carlocab.com because there are some pages on our site that we don’t want indexed. For instance, we don’t want Google to index our success page. It’s where our visitors go to after they use our contact forms. It has thin content and we don’t want it part of Google’s record of our site.

These are the most common meta robot commands:

  • noindex – This prevents Google from indexing the page.
  • nofollow – This tells Google not to follow any links on the page.
  • noarchive – This prevents Google from showing a cached version of the page.

If you want Google to index and follow the links in a page, you do not need to use a meta robots tag as Google, by default, indexes and follows links on a page,

Example: <meta name=”robots” content=”noindex,follow”/>

4. Meta Viewport

The meta viewport tag tells Google that the page is mobile-friendly. This is important for SEO as Google has implemented mobile-first indexing on most sites.

Paste the sample code below if your page is mobile-friendly. If you’re using WordPress, this is automatically added to the code of your site.

Example: <meta name=”viewport” content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1″ />

5. Rel Canonical

The rel canonical tag is crucial to avoid on-site duplicate content. Yes, duplicate content can happen within your site–on the same URL.

Did you know that you can show different content on www.domain.com and domain.com? That’s why Google treats those two as two different websites if you don’t redirect one from the other. Google also treats these URLs as different pages if left with no rel canonical tag:

You can tell Google which is the main URL by using the rel canonical tag. Aside from using the rel canonical tag, it’s good practice to canonicalize your domain as well by implementing 301 redirects.

Example: <link rel=”canonical” href=”https://www.carlocab.com/meta-tags/” />

Avoid The Meta Keywords Tag

Forget about it. It only worked before. However, people took advantage of it by stuffing huge amounts of keywords on it so Google stopped using it.

Other Meta Tags

These are tags that you can do without but can be useful for different sites for specific circumstances.

  • Social meta tags – This tag is not important for SEO but can be helpful for social media. If you correctly set up the 5 important meta tags above, your posts will look good on social media so this tag won’t be necessary.
  • Language – There’s no need to use this meta tag unless your site is not in English, which will require you to declare the main language used in pages.
  • Geo tag – This meta tag is not supported by Google. If you want to geo-target your site, verify it via Google Search Console and use the international targeting tool.
  • Site verification tags – If you’re trying to verify your site on Google Search Console or some SEO tool, you may be required to paste a small snippet of meta tag that includes a verification code.
  • Rating tag – This tag indicates the maturity rating of a page. If your website does not contain adult content, you don’t have to think about this tag.

Links are what makes the world wide web, a web–sites linking out to other websites. Links pointing from point A to point B.

However, there are many types of links. Today, we’ll be discussing outbound links. What are they? Are they important for SEO? How many is too much? We’ll answer those questions below.

What Are Outbound Links?

Outbound links are links that point from your site to another site. Most, if not all, websites have outbound links. They are used to reference other articles, share information from other sites, link to social media profiles, and more.

Its counterpart is inbound links. Inbound links are links from other sites pointing to your site.  They are also called backlinks. These links are extremely important for SEO as these links determine the authority of your website. Inbound links are a different topic altogether. However, if you want to read more about it, here’s a good article on how to build backlinks. (By the way, that link points to another site, that is an example of an outbound link!)

Dofollow and nofollow outbound links explanation

What Are The Types of Outbound Links?

There are two types of outbound links. They are dofollow and nofollow.

Dofollow Links

Dofollow links pass link juice. This type of link passes authority. If you have a dofollow link from an authoritative site, you’re getting some of that site’s authority. It’s like a trusted individual vouched for you; most people would think you’re a stand-up guy, too. Generally, this is the type of link that you want for SEO.

Nofollow Links

Nofollow links do not pass link juice. But, it doesn’t mean that they’re useless for SEO. Nofollow links are often used if you’re unsure if the site you’re linking to is trustworthy. This is commonly used on blog comments and other user-generated content that may contain an outbound link.

Nofollow links from other websites can be good for SEO, too. In fact, Google “expects” several nofollow links pointing to your site. These “expected” links come from social media profiles, trusted directories, online maps, etc.

A nofollow link may look like this: <a href=”https://www.site.com/” rel=”nofollow”>Site</a>

Why Are Outbound Links Important for SEO?

Outbound links are a ranking factor. Authoritative sites link to other trustworthy sites. So, always remember to link to other relevant authority sites.  It shows relevance and enhances your credibility.

Aside from its direct SEO benefits, linking to other sites will likely result in those websites noticing you. They are webmasters, too, and they monitor their backlinks. If you have great content, one way or another, they may link back to your content as well.

How Many Outbound Links Per Page?

There is no exact number. However, this study only used two hyperlinks, and they’ve seen definitive results.

In our SEO Services, we usually practice adding 2-3 dofollow outbound links to authority sites per page we optimize. But, whatever feels natural is OK. Take a look at this post, there are more than 3 outbound links here. But it’s OK because it’s the natural thing to do. I’m talking about a lot of topics, and I have to reference a lot of stuff.

Are a Lot of Outbound Links Bad for SEO?

If the links point to relevant authority websites and their placement is natural, no. But, if you put a bunch of irrelevant links that offer no value, especially if those links point to low-quality spammy sites, it’s going to be a problem.

What Are The Cons of Outbound Links?

Even if it doesn’t hurt your site’s SEO, you have to keep in mind that outbound links may drive visitors away from your site as it points them to a different website. Determine the purpose of the page first. If it’s for SEO, then feel free to add relevant outbound links. If the page’s purpose is to capture leads like a squeeze page, then you may have to think again.

Key Takeaways

  1. Outbound links to relevant authority sites are good for SEO.
  2. Outbound links to spammy irrelevant sites are bad for SEO.
  3. Dofollow links pass link juice–the type of link you want for SEO.
  4. Nofollow links do not pass link juice, but they still have some positive SEO effects.
  5. Add 2-3 outbound links to relevant authority sites per page you optimize. More is OK, so long as it’s natural and adds value to the page.

Social signals? Does it really help increase SEO rank?

Google’s Matt Cutts said that social signals do not affect search rankings. Perhaps. However, if something you posted on social media becomes viral, your page will be talked about, which means that your website gets exposed, which will gather a lot of traffic, which will help you get links.

It may not be a search engine ranking factor but social signals still can have significant effects on your SEO. So how exactly do you get a post viral and on top of the SERP ranks, how do you make people like, share, vote, pin, or view your post? Yeah, you can pay advertisements to market your post, but the best way is through making sure that the content you post is engaging, free, and fun. Lucky for you, I know exactly what to do.

Know Your Audience for Your Audience Knows Best

Make content that targets a specific audience, spy on them if you have to, just make sure that you are aware of their demographic data and understand their interests and preferences, this will allow you to create quality content that they can easily associate with. Understanding where you post is also important. People on Twitter and Facebook would love humorous content, but I doubt that comedy would be appealing on Google+ and LinkedIn.

Be Imaginative with Your Content

Explore the various types of content. Use images, videos, infographics, and memes. Also, consider conjuring up challenges or contests, most people are innately competitive, remember the Ice bucket challenge?

Asking your audience a question and making a poll where they can vote is also an excellent way to engage your audience. Lastly, provide some tips and some incentives. These are highly effective ways to make your post get noticed.

Be in the Moment

You need to make a content that is base on recent news and breakthroughs in your industry. Follow trends that your audience is also following. People long for information that is currently hot, popular, and in demand.

Regularly Connect with Your Audience

Don’t forget to reply to comments and provide feedback on inquiries. Be sure to you let your audience know that you appreciate their participation. Flirt a little by liking-back, sharing, and retweeting some of your audience’s posts. Consistently create high-quality content and make updates so that your audience will easily be familiar with your brand. Familiarity is an excellent way to get followers and make fans.

Don’t Fear Controversy

Create controversial content. Topics that most people have strong opinions about tend to go viral. Don’t provide your personal opinion, rather, be neutral. Let your audience square off their views and don’t take sides.

What Are Social Engineering Attacks?

These are the deceptive tactics that trick users into clicking a button or image which installs unwanted software or make users reveal personal information, such as passwords, phone numbers, or credit card information.

These deceptive embedded content are those that disguise like a trusted entity which tries to lure users into making a horrible mistake. They pose as trusted images which make them dangerously deceitful. Here are some examples of deceptive content.

Those that mimics a dialogue from FLV software developer: Install button

fake flv

Those claiming that your software is out of date: Update button

And in most file-sharing and streaming sites: download button and play button.

How many times have you clicked on those only to be redirected to harmful sites which push unwanted software downloads and updates or offers subscription traps, job-opportunityand quick money making schemes. Don’t worry, you are not alone. These fake buttons blend in and are often not recognizable from the rest of the page. They mimic the site’s look.

Thankfully Google, in their newest announcement titled “No More Deceptive Download Buttons“, said that they would be expanding Safe Browsing protection and would be targeting all those issues mentioned above.

While under the protection of Google, those users who use Chrome browser who encounters social engineering attacks will be presented with an image having this kind of message.

Google Warning

Google will flag down websites that contain social engineering content. This protection will create a much safer browsing experience and will protect users from frustration, bad advertisers, scammers, and maybe even viruses.

Link building is a challenging task. In fact, the link building tactics of an SEO agency may be the defining factor of an experienced agency to an agency that’s just full of promises.

Backlinks are still the #1 search engine ranking factor. That’s why caution must be implemented because search engines take this very seriously. Some people tend to forget that search engines are almost omnipotent these days compared to 5 years ago where there are tons of loopholes to manipulate.

Link Building is a strategy. There are numerous ways to get backlinks. There are good ways and bad ways. We must learn the proper guidelines and which strategies to avoid. Misguided efforts to build up links cause more harm than good.

Here are 3 Link Building Failures and the ways to avoid them.

1. Spam – Because It’s Only for Eating

Spamming is a common black hat strategy, there are numerous kinds of spam and some of the most common spams are:

A. Forum Spam

This refers to posting on forum threads for the sole intention of getting backlinks. Webmasters who uses this strategy creates profile spams, joins different forums and posts their backlinks on different threads.

Here’s What You Can Do Instead

Don’t join communities just to post backlinks. Simple right. Genuinely join communities, be legitimate and contribute. Also, avoid joining forums that don’t monitor spam content. If the community is full of spammers, then there’s a risk that you will be branded one as well.

B. Trackback and Comment Spam

Trackbacks allows bloggers to communicate between websites. You wish to write a post and link to another blog but also want your readers to see your post. A trackback is a way for you to ping the other bloggers and let them know that you wrote a post that links to their blog. They will receive a trackback notification and will decide whether to display it as a comment or not. If shown, the comment will include a title, excerpt and a link to your blog post.

What spammers do is to generate countless automated scripts or scraped contents to send tons of trackbacks to different websites hoping that they could leave their links on websites where trackbacks are not being monitored. Comment spam, on the other hand, is done by posting random, irrelevant, nonsensical comments on a blog article.

Here’s What You Can Do Instead

If you wish to send a trackback, make sure that what you post and the blog you link with is in high quality, relevant, and is related. Some authors monitor their work so if you post something on their blog that looks spammy they may report you. Avoid this by writing comments that matter. Be authentic. Same goes to your blog. Monitor your blogs and the trackbacks you received and make sure that you don’t get penetrated by spammers.

C. Article Directory spam

An article directory is a site where you can submit articles with anchor texts linking back to your site to obtain backlinks. Once the articles are uploaded users can download it and use it on their own website. If they publish your article, you will get inbound links from their website, this becomes a spam when webmasters upload inappropriate contents, spin-off articles, and uses irrelevant anchor texts, hoping that other websites publish their work, which resulted for search engines to become critical of this link building strategy.

Here’s What You Can Do Instead

If you wish to use article directories, then make sure that the content of your work is relevant, unique, and with an appropriate anchor text. You should also make sure that the article directory where you put your article is a high-quality directory.

2. Buying Links

Buying links are easy, quick, and convenient. Purchased links can get you many links with the proper link text pretty quickly, and could give you a boost in search engine rankings. A powerful link with a high page rank and many outbound links will cost more but will garner better results. It’s an extremely effective link building tactic. Unfortunately, search engines are very strict about it, and we strongly advise against it. It’s not worth risking for the penalties can be severe.

Here’s What You Can Do Instead

Never buy links. Invest in good content instead. Use your money to hire a great writer. Do inbound marketing. Create infographics. Remarkable content is the most effective way to build links.

3. Private Blog Network

A private blog network is a set of blogs that is owned or controlled by a single individual or company. Usually, PBNs are created by getting expired domains that has links pointing to it. A webmaster uses this as a link building strategy. They buy numerous expired domains, and they “revive” those by adding trash content for the purpose of funneling links to their main website which, in return, increase the SEO ranking of that site. This worked for quite some time a few years ago but Google took action against private blog networks and penalizes sites that are using this tactic.

Here’s What You Can Do Instead

PBNs are not entirely bad. It’s only wrong if you create it for the sole purpose of link funneling. There are ways to utilize PBNs without being penalized. Instead of buying expired domains, it would be better if you create new ones. Refrain from making many microsites, keep it to a minimum and make sure that you actively promote and market each, and create unique and valuable content on each of the websites. In fact, the popular blogs LifeHacker, Gizmodo, Kotaku, and more are all part of a blog network.

It’s APEC week here in the Philippines, and traffic is at its worst. That’s why we went out of town for a while and avoided the busy streets of Manila. Tonight, I’m in the City of Vigan. Home of the guilty pleasure Bagnet and Vigan longganisa.

I know the city’s specialty, but I don’t know what restaurant serves it best. What do I do? You got that right, I search Google. Gone are the days where “word of mouth” was really word of mouth. Now it is word of mouth through Facebook, blogs, and Google.

So I thought I’d share with you some of the stuff we do to improve the search engine rankings of our clients who own a restaurant.

1. Create A Google My Business Account

Google My Business Listing

Google My Business was created by Google for people to have an easier time locating businesses. One of the benefits you get when you create an account is that your restaurant’s details will appear on the right-hand side of a desktop search result for your business. Google maps will also show all your necessary information such as your address and contact number.

2. Create A Google Alert

When you create a Google Alert for your restaurant name, you will receive an email every time Google sees a page with your restaurant’s name on it.

What does this mean to you?

You can recover unlinked mentions. There might be some people who blogged about your restaurant but didn’t realize that you have a website they can link to or someone who simply forgot to link to your website. When you’ve set upped a Google Alert for your restaurant name, you can recover these links by emailing them and asking for a link. Simple. Cunning. Effective.

3. Start A Blog

A blog is a great way for you to talk to your customers, announce discounts, and set events. A blog could also make them feel closer and connected to you and your business because you can talk in a more personal way.

On the SEO side of things – A blog can help you get better rankings because you can easily publish new content – and Google loves sites that are often updated. With a blog on your restaurant website, you can update your site regularly.

4. Create A Facebook Page

Having a Facebook page is as common as being able to breathe. Almost everyone is on Facebook. When you create a Facebook Page for your business, you could easily share your website and blog posts to get shares and likes.

Social shares as a ranking factor is a controversial issue. There are lots of studies that prove that there is a positive correlation between social shares and rankings, but Google did not confirm it. Nevertheless, most content that gets shared is quality content, and quality content is what you should be posting. So even if social shares are not ranking factors, it could only do you good because you will be producing quality content.

5. Implement Structured Data

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 11.43.54 PM

By having a structured data for your address and contact information, your search result would look better. A person who searches for your restaurant could easily see your address and contact information under your search result.

Structured data is not limited to your address and contact information. Your page title, description, and other details should also be structured. By doing this, it would be easier for Google to determine what your page is about, helping you rank higher in search results.

6. Encourage Online Reviews

Screen Shot 2015-11-20 at 11.51.10 PM

Encouraging online reviews are good for your business because other people would get an idea on how other people liked or disliked your business.

That’s why Google is displaying restaurant reviews on their search result as well. Reviews is a local SEO ranking factor. So if you have extra desserts, offer them for free to your customers in exchange for a review.

P.S. – This post is NOT sponsored by Gordon Ramsay. Though, it would be awesome if it was!

P.P.S. – Check out SEO Philippines. Maybe we can help you rank your restaurant’s website. (Shoutout to my bud, Dirk, at Serpshake SEO. If you’re in Singapore and need SEO, hit them up!)

The Basics of Multilingual Link Building https://www.carlocab.com/the-basics-of-multilingual-link-building/ https://www.carlocab.com/the-basics-of-multilingual-link-building/#comments Thu, 07 Apr 2011 15:25:54 +0000 https://www.carlocab.com/?p=3578 Need help with SEO? Check out our SEO Services and let our professional team, help you. The Web is becoming an increasingly multilingual place. Though English is still the top language on the Web, Chinese and Spanish now hold a plurality and both are growing much more rapidly. Already the majority of Internet users don’t speak English, at least not as their primary language but very few English-speaking sites reach out to this audience, essentially ignoring over half of the Web’s users. Many feel this is unnecessary because their site is only available in English. However, more and more people are multilingual themselves and, even if they aren’t, automated translation tools such as Google Translate make it easy enough to read pages not in one’s native language.

However, promoting across languages means making an SEO effort across multiple languages and that, in turn, means link building across multiple languages.

Unfortunately, link building across multiple languages is no simple task. But for those who want to try, here are a few simple tips to help you get started:

1. Hire a Native Speaker

Native speakers can be hired for translation and other services increasingly cheaply online, making them worthwhile both for translating your existing content and for leaving comments, submitting your site to directories and other link building activities.

Simply put, native speakers simply do far better translation than automated systems and work better than doing link building in your native language.

2. Be Sensitive of Cultural Issues

Overcoming a language barrier is more than just changing words, it is important to note that humor, idioms and other elements of language may not translate well either. A joke that might be hilarious in your country could be outright offensive in another.

You have to keep in mind cultural issues and boundaries when you’re link building across languages or you may find yourself actually hurting your site’s reputation.

3. Focus on Quality, Not Quantity

As with most link building, it’s crucial to focus on the quality of inbound and outbound links, not quantity. A small handful of high-quality, prominent links will matter far more than a large number of spammy, out of the way links.

This is especially true with link building as you need to spend time to craft and hone every link you send out as producing a large number of shoddy links is a sure-fire way to create garbage content that no one wants.

4. Translate Your Content

If possible be sure to translate your content and post it on another page. Google doesn’t penalize duplicate content if it is in another language so there is no fear of a duplicate content penalty. Translated content makes it a great deal easier to access for those you’re targeting and encourages them to link back to you own their own.

5. When in Doubt, Start with Directories

Finally, just as with link building in your native language, when you don’t know where to begin, start with directories and sites that openly accept submissions. They are easy to submit to, even if you want to do it on your own, and can provide a great deal of SEO benefit right out the gate.

it may not be all you need to do, but it is a solid first step.

Let Our SEO Team Help You

In the end, there’s no real magic to multilingual link building, the principles work very much the same as ordinary link building but come with a new series of pitfalls both through the language barrier itself and through cultural differences.

The Internet has created incredible opportunities for businesses of all shapes and sizes.  It has made it possible for small businesses to operate within a global marketplace, especially through affordable SEO Services in the Philippines.  However, harnessing the power of the World Wide Web is not as simple as it might seem.  In fact, it can be hard to generate lasting success in the online environment.  While having a website is essential, the real goal is to generate traffic to that website.  Here, Forum Link Building can be of immense service to you.

The Need for Increased Traffic

Driving traffic to your website is the first step in attaining success for your business in the online marketplace.  Simply getting web users to visit your website once can be a chore.  However, you need to go beyond a one-time visit.  You need to establish repeat business and even increase your traffic flow.  For the average business owner operating on a definite budget, this can seem like an impossible task.

Link Building Service offers businesses the means to get around the problem of generating increased traffic flow without breaking the bank.  How is this accomplished?  Simply put, this website allows you to harness the power of user forums and direct that traffic to your website.  How is this beneficial to you, though?

Limited Outbound Links

One of the key benefits of this type of service is the fact that all links to your website are placed on pages with 5-15 outbound links.  This ensures that you are not “lost in the shuffle.”  When you place links on pages with a high saturation of other outbound links, it can be very easy for users to overlook your link.  However, with only 5-15 outbound links, there is no chance of this, giving your link better visibility.

High PageRank Forums

In addition, you will find that Forum Link Building places links only on high PageRank forums – those with a PR9.  This ensures that Google places a high value on those links, and that you receive the benefits associated with correct link weighting and valuation.

The Guarantees

While these are all key elements in boosting your company’s visibility and profitability online, the guarantees offered by Forum Link Building are the true keys to your success.  The company offers give guarantees of immediate interest to business owners and entrepreneurs.  These include the following:

The company will replace broken or removed links at no charge to you, for a period of 12 months after your purchase.

The company guarantees that all links will come from “do-follow” forums.  If a forum places a no-follow tag on your link, that link will be replaced at no cost to you.

Forum Link Building will provide link placement by the deadline specified in your order agreement.  If any delay occurs, you will receive two free bonus links for each day of delay beyond the agreed upon date.

Link Building Services guarantees that all links will adhere to Google Guidelines and forum rules.  If any link is found to be not in compliance, it will be replaced at no cost to you.

Finally, the company guarantees that your backlinks will all appear natural to search engines.  The frequency with which your links are built will ensure that search engines like Google see these as a natural part of website growth, further enhancing your benefits.

Finally, if you are dissatisfied with your results, Forum Link Building offers a money-back guarantee.

In Conclusion

Linkbuilding is an essential ingredient for online success.  However, it can be easy to get it wrong, leading to reduced visibility, or even being blacklisted by search engines.  Forum Link Building is the best way to ensure that your website enjoys increased traffic, allowing you to benefit from the 30,000+ visitors per month generated through forum links, without worrying about the problems that can occur with other linkbuilding programs.

GASP! It’s been a while since I last did this huge list thing, hope I still got the Kidblogger in me. I’m getting old!

But this was rather late to say the least. I was supposed to post this the other week but got loads of stuff got in the way. Still, I’m quite happy to finish writing this BIG article so I hope you like it.

ALERT! Disclaimers below…

First disclaimer, some ideas just happen to pop out my head so you might find them a bit “rad”.

Second disclaimer, some tactics are so bad ass and effective, people “just happen” to not like them ;-)

Third disclaimer, I’m not gonna talk about submitting to web directories, press releases and all those rehashed stuff. I’m not saying that they don’t work, I’m saying that it has talked about a lot of times before.

Other than that, I’m pretty sure you’ll like it…

Do The Link Bait

To bloggers, this is a household name. To others, it might sound weird. So…

What the heck is link baiting anyway?

Tons of people tried to explain link baiting in long articles that go on and on. I’ll be frank, I can’t read long articles that don’t talk about big trucks, some mighty cool weird facts and chicks.

So let’s keep it simple – link baiting is simply “something” (article, tool, picture, anything) that make people want to link to you.

Here are some goodies you can do…

1. Make a list – No need to explain, examples will tell ya: 50 most important people on the web, 100 best movie lines, 69 ways to build backlinks ;-)

2. Perform studies – There’s a stats junkie inside of almost every people – wanting to know every new website linking to you, conversion rates of certain colors, how people look at a webpage and all sorts of stuff. But hey, it’s solid content and damn interesting.

3. Make graphs that are hard to understand – Just something that might help you with #2 up there. Can’t help myself to include this. OCD? Nah… complicated = good (at some point). Ok seriously though, when you perform studies, presentation matters. Churn out spiffy graphs that’ll help you explain what you found out.

4. Expose a scammer – Works all the time. Heck, anything with the word “expose” in it will be a link magnet! (hint: controversy) But be careful, you have to back up yourself on this one. You need SOLID proof.

5. Quizzes and tests – “Mark completed the quiz  ‘Are You Awesome?’ with the result AWESOME!.” Sounds familiar? Yep, Facebook! And it’s popping every minute! Why do you think the IQ test industry is so big?

6. Show off – $100,000 Adsense check, $40,000/month via blogging – what do they have in common? They Flaunt, they show off BUT how do they get away with it? (this one is stolen from NLP) They portray the “reluctant hero” story line – “I’m just an ordinary guy, I don’t want this attention, but people keep asking me so…”

Try Google’s Web 2.0 Favorites

The idea is simple, you make these “midget blogs”, slap an article on it with a link back to your site, publish it and forget about it.

You can do this by using your own domain, hosting them in different IP’s and stuff BUT that would need some upfront cash. So instead of buying hundreds of domains and paying a monthly bill on hosting, you can slap those articles on these free “midget blog” sites.

7. Squidoo – Probably my favorite of all the “midget blogs” available. Totally far-out drag and drop modules, not so strict moderators, solid backlinks and a chance to get some quality traffic too. Hey, it’s Seth Godin!

8. Hubpages – Cool site and sweet community. You might need a better article though because before they do-follow your links, they’ll look at your article first and they’ll decide if it’s worth do-following your links.

9. Blogger – My second favorite. Again, drag and drop stuff, no strick moderators and solid backlinks. Almost zero traffic though.

10. Bloggersbase – This one is pretty sweet. They understand that you’re there for promoting your own blog so it’s ok for them to put an author info at the end of your article.

11. Ever –  Weirdest.Photo.Ever.com, Sexiest.Blonde.Ever.com, Best.Guns.Ever.com – cool sister site of Squidoo.com. The idea is simple, when you get to the site they have a drop down of adjectives you can choose from – that’ll be the first word in your domain and the second or third is up to you.

12. Webs – Please bear with me though if I cry while typing stuff about Webs (formely FreeWebs, it’s just that this is one of the site I was used to when I first started, it’s so memorable to me *cry cry* :-)

OK, seriously, I like the easy interface. They do post a wide AdSense ad on top of the page though, but other than that, you’ll like it.

13. Devhub – Here’s a new player in the field, one account, tons of sites, referral program and automatic monitization + cash out at $5, so you make money while building links too, sweet!

14. Tumblr – Tumblr blogs are for vanity and just for pure social networking so when you post stuff here, appear natural. Write like you’re talking to your close friend. You might want to add some nonesense pictures too, BIG ++ in appearing natural ;-)

15. Xanga – My dad used to use this waay back when I was 10, posting pictures and stuff – multiply-ish type of site.

I haven’t tried the 6 “midget blog”  sites below personally…

16. Webjam – Create your own social networking site kind of thing, looks promising.

17. Weebly – Drag and drop stuff, no advertising and lots of templates.

18. ZoomBlog – Integrates with Flickr, Bloglines and Technorati

19. Wikidot – Another cool wiki site.

20. Nexo – Another multiply-ish type of site, kinda hard to get it because it has the “For family and friends” site feeling.

21. Rateitall – This one’s pretty unique – you can make a post and let others rate it OR you can be the one who rates stuff. They’ve also filled the site with tons of quizes.

(WARNING – powerful hint: interlinking.)

Social Bookmarking

22. Digg – Weird stuff, odd pictures and tech – that makes it my favorite social bookmarking site :-) OK, aside from being my favorite, Digg has a very slick interface.

23. Slashdot – “News for nerds. Stuff that matters.” Very very strict moderators. Mainly because, the site is PR 9 since way back then. So I suggest post “real” cool stuff that the slashdot community would be interested in.

24. Spurl – Very simple, clean interface, lesser ads, I like it.

25. Plime – From the looks of it, it’s a heavily customized Pligg, splashed with weird but attractive colors – brith of Plime!

26. Dotnetkicks – This one only allows system stuff (ASP, C#, C++, XML, etc) Another site that looks to be built upon Pligg.

27. Searchles – Has a wide category for the internet marketing niche, voting is from 1-5 stars (or circles)

28. Bibsonomy – Another very clean and simple social site.

29. Tweako – One of the social sites I was able to see the actual growth, literally almost the start. I was able to talk to the founder, awesome dude.

30. Yattle – Social bookmarking site with a mini-blogging service

Don’t Be Shy – Upload Videos

If you can’t stop talking, better grab a camera and record it, another easy way to get a backlink.

For camera shy’s out there, you can always make use of camtasia or powerpoint, way easier. It doesn’t have to be totally cool, it just have to be good enough to get accepted on these sites (and of course, to show to the public :-D):

31. Dailymotion – Just upload any of your own video and get a link in the profile page – that easy.

32. Videojug – A video site full of how to videos. I’m pretty sure the videos are moderated, but heck, I bet it’s easy to get in.

33. Viddler – Slick interfae, and unlike the two above, you get a link on EACH video you submit!

Giveaway YOUR Docs

After slapping your articles on those “midget blog” sites, you can submit it as documents on these sites and still get away with a link. You can also submit a free report you already have, no duplicate content issue.

34. Scribd – The pioneer in the document-submitting industry :-D

35. Issuu – Sleek interface with voting system.

36. Docstoc – Pretty promising with referral reward system.

Make Use Of Torrents

Same idea as submitting your report or articles, but this time you give them away via Torrent. You get a link on the torrent search engine’s description area.

37. Fenopy

Ordinary Persons Too Have A Voice – Petition

Make a petition related to the niche you are in and introduce yourself with a link to your blog, that easy:

38. ipetitions

39. Gopetitions

40. Petitionthem

Social Networking Profiles

I’m pretty sure there’s a lot of social networking profiles out there that doesn’t have the no-follow tag in the links on your profiles, but these are some quick finds:

41. Friendster – Friendster has been on the platue recently probably due to the tons of bugs the site have, still worth creating a profile there though.

42. Gather – Social networking site where you can create a blog that links to your site ;-)

Flattery

Most of these stuff take advantage of human nature, it’s almost as close as pointing a gun at their head asking them to link to your site, OK not really but these stuff works pretty good.

43. Rank and rate them – Definitely “tickles” human nature. Rank people in your niche using any weird ranking factors, but works best with trusted 3rd party sources. Check out the top 100 make money online blogs and the Youngest Bloggers (WARNING: Self promotion, self promotion!)

44. Interviews – Wow, very old, very saturated tactic that STILL works. Heck, I bet it will always do – it’s a win-win. The interviewer gets good content, the interviewee LINK gets good exposure.

45. Awards – Another human nature tickler. Simple idea really – you award people in your niche for something. For example, the most absurd blogging blog (OK, that’s not a good example, heh), the blog design, the best writing style. Then, give out a plaque, or in the online world, a badge or a small spiffy graphic to post on their blog.

Use One Of The Most Potent Weapons Of Influence – Reciprocity

GASP! Human nature stuff here again.

Has someone ever helped you and asked for nothing in return? Then when he needs something, whatever it is, you feel obliged to help? That’s human nature talking to you.

You feel obliged to reciprocate. So that is what we’re going to take advantage here, we’ll make them feel obliged to link to us.

Even the Godfather uses this “persuasion” tactic.

46. Testimonials – A very saturated tactic here too that still works. Can get you a link from a very authoritative site and has a big chance to drive you loads of traffic.

47. Sponsor, donate – There are some blogs there that has an Amazon Wishlist or a “buy me a drink” donating buttons. Most of lists down all the people who have donated in some way. Maybe via blogroll or via a post, permanent link right there.

Fresh and funky

48. Interview someone on twitter – not a lot of people has done it, so you might even get top bloggers to link to you.

49. Give t-shirts – Dude, who doesn’t love free t-shirts?

50. Ask for the link – “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.” – Matthew 7:7

Money doesn’t come to you, you come and get it (although in some cases, after you’ve made lots of it, they happen to come to you) it’s the same for backlinks, you come and get it – email bloggers that you’ve made an awesome post (hint!) that’s worth sharing to their readers. Of course, you wouldn’t want to do this for each of your post.

51. Yedda – It’s like Yahoo Answers, but it’s do-follow B-)

52. The new article marketing – The new article marketing just got more badass. Now, it gives you a heavy link juice concentrate and damn fine targeted traffic. Checkout the new article marketing.

53. Zug – Tell a joke, get a link. Simple. Rad.

54. Throw a contest – This got a bit saturated in the “make money” market because of the massive links contest hosts get before, but still works. Tip: to make this work, make it a lot easier for people to join. For example, twittering, copy pasting a small blurb of text to their blog, Stumbling the post, etc.

55. Hotscripts – You a programmer dude? Make a simple script and give it away. You’ll get a link back from the BIG hotscripts directory PLUS, you can request a link back from the people who will use your script.

56. Firefox extension – Ok, if you’re not a programmer, it’s worth hiring one just for this. addons.mozilla.org is PR 9 baby! If your extension gets approved, that’s a permanent link!

57. Make an article about Digg – Diggers REALLY dig posts about digg. Seriosly, very easy to take advantage of that. Remember the chick who made a song about Digg LINK? Works.

58. Blog about twitter – Hey, what the heck, Twitter is ON FIRE, it’s hot. Think about it, almost every Twitter app out there gets its time on the spot light at least once.

59. Eye catching design – This technique works best on design blogs (or other related topics). The idea is, make a great, unique design and get featured on design blogs like Smashing Magazine and CSS galeries.

5-minute changes

Actually, I’m pretty sure the stuff below won’t even take 5 minutes to set up. The reward is great and turnkey. I recommend doing the two…

60. Domain canonicalization – The name is the only one scary, this is just an easy fix. I made an article about domian canonicalization before.

61. Take advantage of scrapers – They are damn pesky but not “that” smart. They grab content from your blogs through your RSS feed – they grab the whole post INCLUDING links. So if you’re linking back to your blog in that post, they’ll link to that too. Of course you can’t always link back to your blog in every post, that would be weird. Here’s a plugin that’ll help you LINK.

Covert tactics

My favorite part, sneaky effective tactics here that requires very little work. Best part is, most stuff here are white hat – totally legit.

If you can’t finish the whole article, just finish this part, you’ll like it.

62. Post at .gov and .edu forums – One of my personal favorites. Totally whitehat and doesn’t require you to “think” at all. No kidding. Here’s a post I did back at 2007 on how to find .edu and .gov backlinks.

63. SELL your WordPress theme – Giving away WordPress themes with footer linking back to your site is old, still works, but old. What if you sell them? You get the link AND the cash. Besides, selling your WordPress theme instead of giving it away pumps up its perceive value. You also give better support because there’s less people to handle. (hint, hint)

64. Give FREE graphics and icons – I’m a big fan of slick icons and buttons and I bet you are too (if you’re not, you probably haven’t seen a good one yet!)

65. Referrer spam – I did an article about referrer spamming awhile back. Sneaky I tell you, but will definitely MAUL your reputation if you’re promoting a legit site. Your host should also be ready to get complaints because this is blatant spamming. On the bright side, this works well on made for affiliates/adsense sites ;-)

66. Create a web directory then “make them” link back to you – I’m pretty sure you’re familiar with web directories wherein you submit your site and they include it in their directory for a link back or for an upfront payment. Now instead of requesting them to link back to your directory, how about requesting a link back to your site? Shotgun but turnkey.

67. Buy an old domain – Buy and old domain, install WordPress on it and slap an article with your link. Easy. Old domains are more authoritative than new ones… well because they’re old – so they give more link juice. Tip: Buying old domains that has a good name is expensive, very. So I suggest getting something that’s just in the middle.

68. Huge do-follow list – Spend 30 minutes a day on commenting on do follow blogs and you’re in for some quality targeted backlinks. Catch? Takes a lot of time. You have to read the blog post, spark some conversation and “appear” natural. Other than that, definitely worth the try – 1400 Do-Follow Blog List.

69. Pattern interrupt – Another one stolen from NLP (btw, I’m NOT an NLP “guru”, I’m not even close to one, I just happen to know some of their “tricks”) pattern interupt, do something your niche is doing the other way around. Quick example is instead of selling ebooks, sell take home study courses, CD’s or DVD’s.

Be creative

There are literally hundreds of link building tactics out there, and I bet thousands of undiscovered stuff.

It’s pure creativity.

Discovering new “midget blog” sites and new human nature “ticklers” are all forms of creativity (or a day sitting infront of my laptop ;-)

If you plan to dominate the search engines you are going to need backlinks, and if you are going to spend your time building backlinks then they might as well from strong authority websites.  Of course you are all now staring at your monitor wondering how you are supposed to do that, right?

Actually, its pretty easy!  There are literally millions of prime link spots just waiting to be picked by the next person who strolls along, you just have to find them!  First I will show you how to find your own backlinks and then I will share some of my secret stash with all of you.

Best Methods for Building Authority Links

There are so many different ways to find and build backlinks,  some methods will vary from niche to niche.  Here are my favorites, why not see how you can adapt them to fit your website.

  • Become a Guest Contributor – Carl did a great job of covering guest blogging in another post, so I will just touch on this briefly.   You can almost guarantee that there is at least one website/blog in your niche that will accept a guest post, you just have to find them.  For instance, if you are in the real estate industry you can write for sites like Real Estate License Direct, in the make money online and home based business industry you can write for Carl and many others.  I usually find a site that I like and send them a friendly email expressing my interest in writing for them, you will be amazed at how easy it is.
  • Social Communities – There are so many authority social communities out there that using them to build backlinks could easily take weeks.  While social bookmarking is a great way to build easy links, its not the only option in town.  You can also use your profile pages to build links.  Some social communities also offer free blogs that you can utilize as a link building resource.  Be sure to check back on your pages and see that they were indexed by the search engines.  It never hurts to drop a few links to those pages so that they will get picked up by Google.
  • Blog Commenting – This is one method that I tend to use very conservatively.  I am not a big fan of spammers, so I try to always add quality comments and contribute to each blog.  Becoming a part of the community is often more valuable than the link itself, so keep that in mind the next time you are dropping a quick comment.  Here is a list of over 500  dofollow blogs to get you started.
  • Forum Signatures – Link building via forum signatures is a debateable method, some think they are of little value and others disagree.  I have seen plenty of websites rank very well thanks in large part to their forum signatures so I feel that they do add value.  There are a lot of authority forums out there, here is a list.
  • Article Marketing – If used selectively, article marketing can be a great way to build links for your niche site.  Google has devalued many of these links, so you are best to only contribute unique articles to the highest authority article directories.

I am sure I am forgetting a few methods, but those should get you started.  I know from experience that just the above methods could literally take you months to cover completely.

3 Authority Backlinks You Can Build Today:

Below are 5 authority websites that allow dofollow backlinks.  I highly recommend that you use these resources with care or the webmasters will certainly stop allowing new links.

  • Stanford Law School – Visit http://cyberlaw.stanford.edu/people-and-blogs click on an article title, click on add a comment, fill out the form include a relevant on topic comment and you will have an authority dofollow .edu backlink to your site.
  • Wikio – Visit http://www.wikio.com, click on sign-up in the upper right hand corner, create and verify your account, log-in to the website and click on publish an article, fill out the article title and body, preview and click submit.  You are done!
  • MSDN Blogs – Visit http://blogs.msdn.com click on the join link, fill out your information, verify the account, return to http://blogs.msdn.com, click on a recently published title and leave a good comment on the page. There are numerous blogs on this site, it is a pr 7 and most blogs have dofollow comments.

These link opportunities don’t even put a dent in the available links out there, but they will give you an idea of what to look for, how to go about getting the links and how to find similar links on other websites.  Enjoy and remember what one ancient wise man once said:
